Water Whimsy
Framingham, MA - New England Wild Flower Society announced today the Society has partnered with New England Garden Ornaments to present Water Whimsy, a small show of large and small water features at Garden in the Woods. In addition to the Michael Mazur fountain in the entrance garden and the Nate McCullin bird baths in the wildlife garden, there are seven fountains which appear in Water Whimsy at the entrance to the Curtis Path, in the Idea Garden, Edible Garden, Rain Garden, and Patio Garden. All of the fountains recirculate the water being used or they are standing water birdbaths. Water Whimsy continues in the Garden through September 7. Included in the show are bubbling, flowing, and standing fountains. Elements were chosen to appear timeless as opposed to new or antique. Chiseled stones, millstones, staddle stones, stone balls, molded balustrades and caps, granite bowls and bamboo are used to create these features, nestled among the native plants in the various gardens. They provide a whimsical feeling within the naturalized structure of the many gardens. Millstones were used in windmills, watermills, and other structures to grind wheat and other grains. Grains would be poured into a round trough. The millstone would be run around the inside outer lip of the trough, grinding the grains. Larger mills used wind or water to power the operation. Smaller mills used human or animal strength to handle the rotation of the millstone around the trough. The three millstones in this exhibit show three different sizes. The two larger stones were imported from England. Staddle stones look like stone mushrooms and were originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks, game larders, etc. These staddle stones lifted the structures off the ground to protect them from moisture and vermin. The two shown adjacent to the Rain Garden are from the Cotswold region of England and are from the 19th Century. The three column fountain in the Entrance Garden is of Basalt, a stone quarried on the west coast of the US. Naturally occurring in the rock face as plates, it is easily cut along its veins into the natural column shape. The top is then cut and polished and the column plumbed for a water feature. The granite bowl used in the Idea Garden water feature is from a piece of Quincy, MA, granite, salvaged from the foundation of a building in Boston. The stone mason who carved it is famous for using a blow torch to carve into stone. The spheres of the Three Sphere Fountain, found opposite the Patio Garden, are hand carved from lava stone. Each has been weathered to a beautiful dark black patina. Scott LaFleur, Botanic Garden Director and Horticulture Director for New England Wild Flower Society, remarked, "Water Whimsy is a great show for the hot days of summer. The soft sounds of the water draw you in close to hear and see the features. They are beautifully integrated into the Garden and look like they were always there. Being a small show, it does not overpower the Garden. You still focus on our collection of native plants when you visit." New England Wild Flower Society's Garden in the Woods was founded in 1931 by landscape designer Will Curtis who developed the Garden with Howard Stiles. The Garden showcased Curtis' designs and interest in featuring native plants for sustainable gardens. Curtis deeded the Garden to New England Wild Flower Society in 1965. The Garden is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and holiday Mondays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 15 through October 31. Guided walking tours of the Garden are given weekdays at 10 a.m. and weekends at 2 p.m. Entrance fees to the Garden are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students with identification, and $4 for youths 3 to 18.

Bill Staines with Mary Pratt and Terence Hegarty opening
Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For over 35 years, Bill has traveled throughout North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's and, has continued to earn an international reputation as an artist Bill sings traditional tunes, country ballads and original songs and delights in having the audience participate. Weaving a magical blend of wit and gentle humor, he is rightfully one of the most popular performers on the folk music circuit. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, "he has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic." His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon. Interspersed between original songs, Bill also includes songs ranging from traditional folk tunes to more contemporary country ballads and delights in having the audience participate in many of the numbers. He may even do a yodeling tune or two - having won the National Yodeling Championship in 1975 at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville Texas. A number of Bill's songs have been recorded by other artists including, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, The Highwaymen, Glen Yarborough, Jerry Jeff Walker, Grandpa Jones, Priscilla Herdman and others. Bill has recorded twenty-two of his own albums, fifteen of which are still in print. Additionally, Bill's songs have been published in four songbooks, If I Were A Word, Then I'd Be A Song, River, Music To Me, The Songs of Bill Staines, and All God's Critters Got A Place In The Choir. Two of the books contain nearly one hundred of Bill's songs. Radio and TV appearances have included A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, The Good Evening Show and a host of local programs on PBS and network TV. Bill continues to drive over 65,000 miles a year, doing what he loves, bringing music to people.

Printmaker Marc Cote "I Rather Wood Cut"; and "In Pen and Pencil" drawings by Nikolay Cherny and Vladimir Chernyayev
Marc Cote is captivated with myths and fables and the way in which these tales draw us in with a pretense of simplicity, only to unfold with layers of delicious commentary on the state of the human condition. In his artwork, he seeks to invoke some of this storytelling spirit that is so deceptively folksy or modest, yet carries with it timeless possibilities for self–reflection. From bestiaries to the Bible, he draws upon evocative literary treatises on morality and life lessons to inform his own pictorial narration. In his woodcuts, etchings, monotypes and sculptural prints, he weaves together imagery from his readings, his childhood memories, and flavorful social history to create motifs that reveal the virtues, vices and victories of invented or borrowed characters. Nikolay Chernyayev, who signs his works as Nikolay Cherny, and Vladimir Chernyaev are twin brothers. They were born in St. Petersburg, Russia. They both started to draw in their early childhood, and were first influenced by, and later studied with, renowned Russian artist Victoria Belakovskaya. They both completed their art education at St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and Industrial Design where they received their BA and MA Degrees. They continued their education at the National Research Institute of Industrial Design in Moscow – a Graduate Course PhD program. Both brothers work in the areas of painting, drawing, and illustration. They participate regularly in various art shows and have won numerous awards and prizes. Works of the artists can be found in private and corporate collections in the USA, Russia, Estonia, German, Czech Republic(Vladimir), and Ukraine. The show "In Pen and Pencil" is the second joint exhibition of Nikolay and Vladimir in the USA. The first exhibition was in 1993, and took place at Framingham Public Library. Nikolay has lived in the USA since 1992. He works in porcelain restorations; calligraphy; book design; and illustrations. He has co-authored a number of art installations, performance events, and decorative art compositions. For a number of years, he has also taught an art course titled Formulas for Drawing. Vladimir still lives in St.Petersburg, Russia. He is Assistant Professor at the St.Petersburg Academy of Fine Art and Industrial Design, of which is is also a graduate. He is a member of the Association of Russian Industrial Designers.

Wolverine Jazz Band
The Wolverine Jazz Band is a seven-piece group that roams over the tradition of American Popular music from the first half of the 20th Century. Dixieland, swing, pop and even a little R&B and Bebop thrown in from time to time keeps the music from stagnating or becoming predictable. Comprised of the top Traditional Jazz musicians in New England, the Wolverines have been successful at festivals and concert appearances throughout the region and nationally as well. Jeff Hughes - cornet ; John Clark - clarinet ; Tom Boates - trombone ; Jimmy Mazzy - banjo and vocals ; Rick MacWilliams - tuba ; Dave Didriksen - drums ; Robin Verdier - piano Band Bio The Wolverine Jazz Band has been performing throughout New England since 1995. In addition to appearances at a long list of local summer concerts, Jazz venues and private functions, the WJB has played concerts at the University of New Hampshire, Foothills Theatre, Arlington Theatre and Cape Cod Community College. Since 2006 they have brought their engergetic and historically informed dixieland and swing playing to national Jazz festivals in Florida, Washington, Tennessee, Ohio and Connecticut, garnering great acclaim. There are currently nine Wolverine Jazz Band CDs available (including one backing national recording star Chris Trapper) with the tenth in production. John Clark Clarinet, Saxophone Born and raised in Natick, John Clark began playing professionally in the Boston area as a substitute with various dixieland and big bands, including the Dixieland Strutters, the Legacy Jazz Band, Commonwealth Jazz, the New Black Eagle Jazz Band and the Paramount Jazz Band of Boston, with which he toured England and Wales in June, 1995. Clark also regularly appears with Lucinda Ellert's Happy Feet Dance Orchestra, Dave Whitney and His Orchestra and Robin Verdier's Monte Carlo Jazz Band. He performs with the Mood Elevators and can be heard on their CDs as well. He has also played and recorded with Ross Tucker's Hot Cat Jazz Band of Connecticut and with the Back Bay Ramblers, appearing at numeous Jazz festivals in Canada and the U.S. with each. Jeff Hughes Cornet, Trumpet Jeff Hughes (dubbed "Mr. Melody" by Ray Smith) has made a name for himself as a Bix-styled cornet player in the Boston area with the Paramount Jazz Band of Boston, New Yankee Rhythm Kings and numerous other groups. By day, he is a mild-mannered marine biologist, but by night he is the leader of both the Brahmin Bellhops and Lost In The Sauce, and is also a disciple of Bunny Berigan. Tom Boates Trombone Tom Boates has been active on the Connecticut jazz scene for a number of years and has toured extensively with both the Hot Cat and Hot Jam bands. As a career school teacher and band director, Tom is uniquely qualified to deal with the rest of us. Tom's playing, singing and arranging talents are all invaluable to the Wolverine Jazz Band. Jimmy Mazzy Banjo, Vocals To fans of traditional jazz, Jimmy Mazzy needs no introduction. Suffice it to say that he has been a central part of the jazz scene in New England for many years and his presence in the Wolverine Jazz Band has been a key part of our success. Jimmy plays regularly at the Colonial Inn (Concord) and Angelica's restaurant (Middleton) and travels extensively with Eli Newberger, Butch Thompson and the Paramount Jazz Band of Boston. Rick MacWilliams Tuba Rick, the co-founder of the Commonwealth Jazz Quartet, has been lending his talents to Jazz groups in the area since the 1960s. Prized for his faultless rhythm and harmonic sense, Rick also brings to the band a wealth of experience both as player and leader. Dave Didriksen Drums Dave Didriksen, another Chicago native, also plays with the Happy Feet Dance Orchestra and is considered one of the most versatile drummers playing in the hot dance style. While he is an expert on the stylistic elements, he never sacrifices swing. Robin Verdier Piano Robin is a retired MIT physicist whose piano career in New England goes back to the 1960's with Stan MacDonald, the East Bay City Jazz Band, Yankee Rhythm Kings, Paramount Jazz Band of Boston and his own Monte Carlo Jazz Band. Specializing in Ragtime and Jazz of the 1920's, Robin brings a wealth of knowledge to the keyboard.
