Naturalistic Garden Symposium
“What’s past is prologue.” After decades of landscape design that emphasized form over function, often at the expense of environmental quality, it is now commonplace for our landscapes to reflect many of the principles developed by early 20th-century naturalistic landscape designers like Warren Manning and Will Curtis, founder of Garden in the Woods. Learn about the intriguing connections between the wild gardens of old and the new naturalism of today, and about the plants that support our efforts to develop beautiful, ecologically-sensitive gardens. Wild Gardens: Past, Present, and Future Rick Darke, President of RICK DARKE LLC, a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm that blends art, ecology, and cultural geography in the design and management of living landscapes William Robinson’s 1870 classic The Wild Garden challenged tradition by suggesting that managed, self-perpetuating plant populations were essential to resource-conserving gardens. This concept resonated with progressive British, northern European, and American gardeners alike, inspiring diverse naturalistic designs. Rick Darke will look at how wild gardening has evolved and why it is more relevant than ever to today’s and tomorrow’s conservation-based gardens. The Natural History of Spring Wildflowers: A Closer Look Carol Gracie, naturalist and author of Spring Wildflowers of the Northeast: A Natural History The wildflowers that brighten our woodlands in spring are more than just a delight for the eye and a lift for the winter-weary spirit. Each has a role in the environment, including interesting interactions with pollinators and seed dispersers. Learn about the fascinating life histories of some favorite spring wildflowers as we examine them in depth. A Sense of Where You Are: Finding a New Naturalism Tobias Wolf, award-winning landscape architect and the owner of Wolf Landscape Architecture What if we asked our landscapes to do more than just look good? Gardens and landscapes can support biodiversity, cleanse and absorb stormwater, and improve soil health. Just as important, they can invite us outdoors and help us feel connected to the world around us. Landscape architect Tobias Wolf will share his experience in shaping landscapes that combine ecological performance with a distinct sense of time and place. He will show how urban and suburban landscapes can incorporate the qualities we value in wild places, and how design that is informed by the structure and function of native plant communities can bring new vitality to public spaces and private gardens. Note: Registration fee includes continental breakfast and lunch. Garden Tours: Exclusive Garden tours, led by our staff, will be held at 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m, before and after the symposium.

Sheraton Framingham Spring Comedy Series with John Turco, Dave Rattigan

A fantastic night of comedy featuring a killer lineup: John Turco, Dave Rattigan and Jimmy Bowes. One of the best comedians in New England, Turco is also one of the most animated, punctuating his smart, sarcastic, satirical material with expressive faces and dead-in impressions. By contrast, Rattigan's dry wit has drawn comparisons to Ray Romano, and landed him on XM-Sirius Satellite Radio and Nickmom.com. Bowes is a school teacher by day, comedian by night, making his mark on the Boston club scene. Doors open at 7 for 8 p.m. show. Come early for dinner at the Postern Grile, and for tickets-and-overnight-stay packages, call the hotel at (508) 879-7200. Sports and other fund-raising groups welcome. Tickets are $20, available on line and also at the door (cash only) on show night, if space permits. For reservations, call (774) 414-7020. Parking is free.

Join us as we explore vernal pools. These mysterious springtime pools often come and go without much notice, but they are an important habitat for many creatures. Come learn why vernal pools are so special and why some animals' lives depend on them. Tim & Myles

The unique relationship of a father and son cannot be argued nor explained, but when the relationship includes musical passion, virtuosity and showmanship - magic happens!
Tim and Myles Thompson have been inspiring audiences throughout the country. With recent performances that include the Montreal Jazz Festival, Walnut Valley Festival, and the Chet Atkins Festival, they have polished their craft to a fine luster. The duo has opened for Spyro Gyra, Don Williams, Mountain Heart, and Richard Elliot.

The two combine their erstwhile talents on a variety of musical settings on this disc, with the best of the mix including the opening “I Ain’t Going Down,” which gives both a chance to shine instrumentally – as well as vocally. Their harmony comes into play on “In Another Life,” which simmers until it reaches the full boiling point. Lyrically, the song is very impressive, as well.

As a vocalist, Tim is very old school in his approach, while Myles tends to venture toward a more youthful sound – as evidenced by the cutting edge vocal and production on “That Ain’t My Style,” which might be the best overall cut on the album. Fans of their instrumental work will also get into the epic “Overdrive,” as well as the musically inventive “Cat Tastrophy,” which stands among the most entertaining jam sessions I have heard in quite some time. Needless to say, musical family ties can be a very good thing!

Bruce Millard with special guests Hokum's Heroes & Michael Moran

"Tenderly, like a whisper, they began to play ... There was nothing else just then, only the music, sweet as the evening breeze, heart wrenching and pure ... " - The Boston Globe

"...infectiously merry mandolin..." - NPR's Mountain Stage Website (NPR.org)

Bruce Millard is known to ATAC audiences from his many appearances over the years — with string band legend Howard 'Louie Bluie' Armstrong ('Sweet Old Song'), jug band musician Jim Kweskin ('Now and Again,' 'Enjoy Yourself'), Tarbox Ramblers, and other acclaimed roots artists, on through a succession of his own modern string bands, Hokum's Heroes the best known among them (http://www.goodtimeguru.com/music/hokumsheroes.html).

In the two off-the-beaten-path years since his last ATAC performance, Millard has been 'making the rounds' — frequently wandering from the Americana landscape to perform with an extensive and diverse range of musicians, including the rock band Men & Volts (Honeymoon Luggage), pop/soul singer Harry Elston (Friends Of Distinction / 'Grazing In The Grass'), the Civil War group Dixon's Gold, the Raga and World Music-inflected Exiles UK, children's musician Wayne Potash, jazz guitarist Howard Alden, the genre-morphing Golden Rulers, and dawn-of-country-music aficionados Wayworn Travelers, a collaborative Carter Family project with Anita Suhanin, Dennis Brennan and Elijah Wald. He'll bring those whirlwind, eclectic two years of experiences and more to this no-boundaries ATAC show, while also spotlighting the individual members of his band, each of whom have their own projects and will feature material of their own. "For years they've been making me sound better than I am. I want to return the favor — turn them loose and show what they can do. We'll be tossing the ball around. It'll be six little concerts wrapped into one."

Opening for Bruce will be a familiar face, founder and former ED of Amazing Things, Michael Moran! Michael has been playing golf, splitting his time between Mass. and Florida, but recently started an open mic in Ft. Myers: he just can't stay away!
